Welcome

Introduction

For a few years now, High Energy Physics experiments use Grid technologies, in the framework of the WLCG and EGEE Grid projects described below. This has created the need to maintain a Grid infrastructure and to develop Grid expertise within CIEMAT's Basic Research group.

The Grid Group at CIEMAT Basic Research Group is in charge of maintaining the CIEMAT-LCG2 Grid site infrastructure, participates in software developments for the Grid and the experiment applicatinons and gives support to Grid users.

Participation in international Grid projects

The Grid, WLCG, EGEE

The Grid is a computing paradigm in which distributed resources (computing power, storage) are shared among members of communities called Virtual Organizations (VOs).

The EGEE project has a main goal of providing researchers with access to a geographically distributed computing Grid infrastructure, available 24 hours a day. It focuses on maintaining and developing the gLite middleware (which is the software implementing the different Grid services) and on operating a large computing infrastructure for the benefit of a vast and diverse research community.

The Worldwide LHC Computing Grid Project (WLCG) was created to prepare the computing infrastructure for the simulation, processing and analysis of the data of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiments. The LHC, which is being constructed at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN), will be the world's largest and most powerful particle accelerator.

The WLCG and the EGEE projects share a large part of their infrastructure and operate it in conjunction. For this reason, they are sometimes refered to as the WLCG/EGEE infrastructure.

The CIEMAT-LCG2 Grid site

The CIEMAT-LCG2 site offers Grid computing services (job processing, storage) as part of the WLCG/EGEE infrastructure. It is open for members of various VOs representing different experiments (cms, biomed, fusion). The stronger local community is the CMS one.

The following link leads to a (hopefully up-to-date) diagram of the infrastructure: Main Grid Services and Supported VOs
