Location:

Sanlúcar de Barrameda is located in the left bank of the river Guadalquivir, in front of the Doñana National Park.

Under the Dukes of Medina Sidonia, Sanlúcar became the capital of the dukedom, profiting from important privileges. It was visited by large number of English, Genovese and Breton merchants becoming an important centre of trading and banking.

The strategic location of Sanlúcar, at the mouth of river Guadalquivir, as the sea port of Sevilla (~100 km up the river) gave an important role in the American enterprise.

From its port Columbus left for his third voyage to the New World in 1498, as well as Magellan and Juan Sebastian Elcano to carry out the first circumnavigation of the world.

Coto de Doñana is, with its 50720 hectares and more than 26000 hectares of protected frontier lands, the most important wetland in Europe, being considered by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve. Its importance is due to its ecological and faunal wealth, with more than 250 specimen in danger of extinction such as the linx, the calamon and the horned coot.

In addition to its ecological unique values, the area of Sanlúcar de Barrameda-Jerez-Puerto de Santa María is world famous for its wines, horses, bulls and flamenco music.
